“I join the bishops’ call for peace in the country and stability in the Sahel,” said the 86-year-old pontiff after the weekly Angelus prayer.

Pope Francis called on Sunday for a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Niger, where the military seized power at the end of July, threatening the stability of the region.

“I am following with concern what is happening in Niger, and I join the bishops’ call for peace in the country and stability in the Sahel,” said the 86-year-old pontiff after the weekly Angelus prayer.

“I join in prayer with the efforts of the international community to find a peaceful solution as soon as possible for the good of all,” he added.
