The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected a proposal by the ruling junta in Niger for a three-year transition period to restore democracy, a regional bloc commissioner said on Monday.
West African countries opposed to the coup in Niger rejected the idea of a maximum three-year transition launched by the military junta on Monday, August 21.
ECOWAS Commissioner Abdel-Fatau Musah told Reuters that the position remained clear: “Free Bazoum unconditionally, restore constitutional order without further delay,” he said in response to a question about the postponement of elections.

The junta leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, had announced on Saturday, August 19, that the military junta that seized power on July 26 would launch a national dialogue to consult on a transition to democracy that “should not last more than three years.”
An ECOWAS delegation had earlier met with General Tiani and President Mohamed Bazoum in the capital, Niamey, on the same day.
