In a shocking incident, a housewife identified as Maryam Zakari has been accused of bathing her son, Babanne Abdulahi, with scalding hot water as punishment for bringing his girlfriend home. The incident, which occurred last Thursday in the Bogobiri area of Calabar, has left the young man with severe burns.
According to eyewitnesses, Maryam Zakari boiled water and used it to shower her son after discovering him in his room with his girlfriend. Instead of addressing the situation verbally, she resorted to pouring the scorching water on his body, causing him immense pain. The victim cried out for help, prompting witnesses to rush to his aid.
Upon visiting the residence of Babanne Abdulahi, sympathizers were present, expressing their disapproval of the mother’s actions. Eyewitness Dauda shed light on the incident, stating, “It is not just about the girlfriend issue, but because the son does not hand over his daily wages to his mother, instead giving them to his girlfriend.”
Following the incident, the victim was immediately taken to a private clinic in Calabar to receive medical attention for his burns. However, the state police command Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, stated that the matter had not been officially reported to the police at the time of contact.
Efforts to speak with both the partners proved unsuccessful, as they declined to comment on the incident.
This distressing incident highlights the need for peaceful conflict resolution within families and the importance of addressing issues through dialogue rather than resorting to violence. Authorities and community leaders should work together to promote awareness of non-violent approaches to conflict resolution, ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals within households.
It is crucial for individuals to understand that resorting to physical harm not only causes immediate pain and suffering but can also have long-lasting psychological and emotional effects on the victims. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering healthy relationships and open communication within families, where conflicts can be resolved through understanding and empathy.
As the investigation into this incident unfolds, it is hoped that appropriate action will be taken to ensure justice for the victim and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
