Thousands of African citizens residing throughout the USA gathered on the 18th of August 2023 to denounce what they referred to as French and American imperialistic attitudes towards Africa. They congregated at the USA headquarters in Washington, DC, in front of the French Embassy, where protestors were seen holding banners calling for an end to French and American Imperialism in Africa.

Chanting slogans such as “Paix au Niger” (Peace in Niger) and “Non à l’intervention de la CEDEAO” (No to ECOWAS intervention), the demonstrators voiced their opposition to the planned intervention of ECOWAS forces in Niger. They also raised their voices against French President Emmanuel Macron, shouting “Down with Macron” and “Macron is a terrorist.”
This protest was sparked by the scheduled intervention of ECOWAS forces in Niger, aimed at removing the new military ruler who deposed President Mohamed Bazoum on the 26th of July 2023.
On the 26th of July 2023, a coup d’état took place in the Republic of Niger. During this event, the country’s presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum. In turn, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the commander of the presidential guard, declared himself the leader of a new military junta.
