At least 15 people have lost their lives and 78 others have been injured following a powerful earthquake that struck western Afghanistan. The earthquake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, originated approximately 40 kilometers from the city of Herat, near the border with Iran, at around 11:00 local time (06:30 GMT).

According to the US Geological Survey, the initial earthquake was followed by three strong aftershocks. Numerous buildings sustained damage, leading to people being trapped under rubble. Rescue efforts are currently underway to save those who are still trapped.

Witnesses described the terrifying moments when the earthquake struck. Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Herat, recounted, “We were in our offices and suddenly the building started shaking. Wall plasters started to fall down and the walls got cracks, some walls and parts of the building collapsed.” The situation has caused great concern and fear among the affected population, with disrupted communication networks making it difficult for people to contact their loved ones.

More than 70 injured individuals have been admitted to the main hospital in Herat for medical treatment. The city, known as the cultural capital of Afghanistan, is located approximately 120 kilometers east of the Iranian border. It is estimated that around 1.9 million people reside in the province, according to 2019 World Bank data.

Afghanistan is prone to earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range, as it lies near the convergence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. Last year in June, the province of Paktika was struck by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake, resulting in the loss of over 1,000 lives and leaving tens of thousands of people homeless.

Rescue teams and authorities are working diligently to provide assistance to those affected by the earthquake. The international community stands ready to support Afghanistan during this challenging time, offering aid and resources to help with the recovery and rebuilding efforts.
